The Endocrinology of Effort.

When you step into your living room for your 10-minute movement practice, you're not just burning calories. You're triggering a hormonal cascade that pharmacists and endocrinologists have studied for decades. The effort you exert isn't just about the immediate energy expenditure; it's about the hormonal afterglow that continues long after you've stopped moving.

Here's what happens when you train with intention:

Endorphins. Your body's natural painkillers. They reduce discomfort, create a sense of mild euphoria, and are released in response to sustained movement—especially when you push past the point where you feel like stopping. The "runner's high" is real, and it doesn't require running. Any sustained effort of 20+ minutes will trigger this response.

Growth Hormone (GH). This is your body's repair and regeneration signal. It peaks during and immediately after intense effort—particularly when you incorporate resistance or high-intensity intervals. Growth hormone is essential for preserving muscle mass, burning fat, and maintaining the metabolism of a younger body.

Cortisol (the good kind). Yes, cortisol gets a bad reputation. But the acute, short-term spike of cortisol that comes with physical effort is essential. It mobilises energy, sharpens focus, and helps your body adapt to stress. It's the chronic cortisol—from poor sleep, unmanaged anxiety, and overtraining—that becomes the problem. The carefully prescribed dose of effort, followed by adequate rest, is one of the most powerful hormonal interventions available.

Perhaps most importantly, the benefits of exercise don't end when you stop moving. The "after-burn effect" —clinically known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)—means your body continues to burn calories at an elevated rate for hours after you finish. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can trigger an EPOC that lasts up to 24 hours, keeping your metabolic furnace burning long after you've showered . This isn't magic. It's endocrinology. Your body is working to restore oxygen, clear lactate, and repair muscle—all of which require energy. The fire continues.

Here is the advanced strategy: use the stress-recovery cycle intentionally.

Instead of spreading your movement evenly across the week, consider this protocol for two or three days:

Morning (or pre-workout): A short, high-intensity session (intervals, sprints, fast-paced movement). This creates the acute cortisol spike that mobilises energy and sharpens focus.

Evening (post-workout): A calming, low-intensity session (gentle stretching, slow walking, deep breathing). This signals the body that the "threat" is over, allowing cortisol to drop and growth hormone to be released for overnight repair.

This isn't just exercise. It's hormonal architecture. You are prescribing the stress and prescribing the recovery, giving your body the signal to adapt, rebuild, and grow stronger.

Richard came to me frustrated. He was doing everything "right"—eating clean, sleeping well, and moving daily. But he couldn't shift the last 15 pounds. "I walk every day for 45 minutes," he said. "I'm not losing weight. I don't understand."

I asked him: "How does your walking feel?" He shrugged. "Fine. Easy. I listen to a podcast. It's pleasant."

For every movement session, ask yourself the following questions immediately after finishing:

  1. "Was my heart rate elevated?" (Y/N)

  2. "Was I slightly out of breath?" (Y/N)

  3. "Did I push beyond 'comfortable' for at least 1 minute?" (Y/N)

  4. "Did I break a light sweat?" (Y/N)

Your goal: At least three "Yes" answers per session.
