Metabolic flexibility: The Two Fuel Tanks

Think of your body as a hybrid vehicle. It has two fuel tanks, but most people only know how to access one.

  • Tank A: Glucose (The Sugar Burner): This is quick energy. It comes from carbs and sugar. It's easy to access, but the supply is limited (stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles). When this tank is full, excess is converted to fat.

  • Tank B: Fatty Acids (The Fat Burner): This is slow, steady energy. It comes from your body fat. It is an unlimited supply (even thin people have thousands of calories of stored fat). However, accessing this tank requires a specific hormonal state: low insulin.

  • Metabolic Inflexibility (The Problem): If you snack constantly or eat high-carb all day, your insulin never drops low enough to open the door to the fat tank. Your body forgets how to access it. You become "glucose dependent." You get "hangry" if you miss a meal because your body is screaming, "Where is the sugar? I don't know how to burn my own fat!"

Pharmacist Note: Metabolic flexibility is the ability to seamlessly switch between burning carbs and burning fat based on availability. It is the opposite of insulin resistance. It is the goal.

Transitioning between tanks - The Technique:

We are not necessarily doing a multi-day fast (unless that's your thing). We are simply extending the natural daily fast that happens while you sleep.

  • The Standard Day: Dinner at 7 PM -> Breakfast at 7 AM = 12-hour fast. This is good, but it barely scratches the surface of fat burning. It usually just digests dinner.

  • The Drill: Dinner at 7 PM -> Breakfast at 11 AM = 16-hour fast. This is the sweet spot.

    • Hours 0-12: Your body is digesting and using the glucose from dinner.

Hours 12-16: Glycogen stores are depleted. Insulin is low. This is when the magic happens. Your body finally says, "Oh, no more food coming? Okay, let's open the fat tank." You are now burning stored body fat for energy.

🥋 Black Belt Move
Transition Drilling

In martial arts, you don't just learn individual moves; you drill transitions. You practice flowing from a sweep to a pass to a submission without stopping. The smoothness of the transition determines your success more than the power of any single move.

This week, we drill the transition from "fed state" (burning glucose) to "fasted state" (burning fat). We want the switch to be smooth, without the "hangry" sputtering.

Patient Experience
The Pharmacology of Fasting.

David (52) came to me frustrated. He had tried everything—calorie counting, meal replacement shakes, even that expensive coach who made him eat six tiny meals a day. Nothing stuck. "I'm not even that hungry," he said. "I just eat because it's 'time to eat.' Breakfast at 7am even though I'm not hungry. Lunch at noon because everyone else does. Snacks because the diet plan said so." He was eating all day, every day, and his metabolism never got a break. His insulin was chronically elevated—the fat-storage hormone—so his body never had a reason to burn its own fuel.

We started simple. A 14-hour overnight fast. Dinner at 7pm, then nothing but water or black coffee until 9am the next morning. That was it. No calorie counting. No special foods. Just time. Within two weeks, he reported something unexpected: "I have more energy in the morning than I have in years." That's the pharmacology of fasting. When you stop constantly spiking insulin, your body finally gets permission to open the fat stores and burn them. David didn't need a new diet. He needed to give his digestive system a reliable shift break—just like any other employee who works better with scheduled rest.

Wisdom from the Sensei:

"The philosophy of fasting calls upon us to know ourselves, to master ourselves, and to discipline ourselves... To fast is to identify our dependencies, and free ourselves from them."

Action point!
This Week’s Drill: The Time-Restricted Feeding Window.

This week's action is to practice "Transition Drills" by condensing your eating window.

  • The Prescription: Aim for a 16:8 protocol—fast for 16 hours, eat all your food within an 8-hour window.

  • How to start:

    1. Finish dinner by 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM.

    2. Skip breakfast the next morning. (Black coffee, green tea, or water are allowed—they don't break the fast).

    3. Have your "first meal" (lunch) around 11:00 AM or 12:00 PM.

    4. Eat your normal, healthy meals (focus on protein, fat, fibre) within the 8-hour window.

  • Who should be cautious: This drill is NOT for everyone.

  • If you have a history of disordered eating.

  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive.

  • If you are a Type 1 diabetic or on medication for Type 2 diabetes, it can cause dangerous lows.

  • If you have adrenal fatigue or high stress (fasting can raise cortisol in some).

  • When in doubt, consult your doctor.

The Challenge

Pick two non-consecutive days this week to practice the "Transition Drill."

  1. Day 1 (e.g., Tuesday): Push breakfast to 11 AM. See how you feel. Are you actually hungry, or just bored/ritualistic? Notice your energy levels mid-morning.

  2. Day 2 (e.g., Thursday): Try it again.

  3. The Adaptation: The first time you do this, you might feel a bit tired or headachy as your body learns to flip the switch. By the second time, it gets easier. You are teaching your body to be a fat burner.

You are not starving yourself. You are simply giving your body the time and space to clean out the glucose and dip into the fat stores. Smooth transitions, not force.

By incorporating these tips and tricks into your routine, you can cultivate a happy and healthy lifestyle.
